FOUNDER & DIRECTOR
Maria Amabilis de Souza, director of Aquarela Brazilian Dance Ensemble and Samba School, is a native Brazilian from Monte Alegre, Minas Gerais. Maria’s beauty and grace led her to be the first Aquarela dancer to be crowned Carnaval Queen of San Francisco.
Maria teaches samba classes open to the public in Berkeley.
CO-DIRECTOR & CHOREOGRAPHER
Silvana da Silva Sousa, Aquarela’s co-director, choreographer and principal dancer, is a native of the state of Goias in central Brazil. Silvana began dancing with Aquarela to share her love of her culture and was crowned official Carnaval Queen of San Francisco. Silvana is known for her explosive style of samba and her intricate, expressive moves.
Silvana teaches regular weekly dance classes in San Francisco.
